Athletic Club's 2-1 victory over Real Betis was a tale of two halves, with the home side capitalizing on their early dominance to secure all three points.
In the opening 45 minutes, Athletic Club were ruthless, scoring twice and dominating possession with 61% of the ball. Their first goal came in the 25th minute, when Iñaki Williams set up Dani Vivian for a clinical finish. Just before the break, Oihan Sancet doubled the lead, converting another Williams assist to put his side in a commanding position.
The second half, however, saw a marked shift in momentum. Real Betis emerged with a renewed sense of purpose, making three substitutions that sparked their comeback attempt. The away side outshot Athletic Club 6-3 in the second half, and in the 75th minute, Pablo Fornals pulled a goal back to set up a tense finale. Yet despite their increased pressure, Real Betis were unable to find an equalizer, with a late Cédric Bakambu goal being disallowed by VAR.
Athletic Club's win can be attributed to their clinical finishing in the first half, where they converted two of their six shots on target, compared to Real Betis' lone goal from three shots on target. The home side's compact defensive shape, which limited the visitors to just four shots inside the box, also played a crucial role in securing the victory.
